Trampoline vs Jump Rope: Which Is Better?

There are so many different ways in which someone can exercise.

And there are some ways you can exercise outside and some inside.

When it comes to exercise, the jump rope is better, since you can burn more calories in a shorter amount of time, it is considerably cheaper, they are safe to use, there is no setup and they hardly take up any space.

Read on to find out why we came to this conclusion.

Exercise

Rebounding on a trampoline and jumping rope are both great exercises for burning calories.

Jumping on a trampoline for half an hour helps you burn as many calories as running for an hour.

This is good for a few reasons.

First, you can decrease the amount of time you are exercising.

I know for me I’ve gone out on runs for an hour or two because I wanted to be able to burn a bunch of calories for that day and eat what I wanted.

But running for a few hours can be hard and tiring.

So instead of running, you can jump on the trampoline for half the time and still have a lot of fun.

Second, it is a different kind of exercise.

Running works out mostly your legs, with a little bit of arm workout depending on how much you swing them when you run.

Jumping on the trampoline can work out your whole body if you are committed to giving yourself a full-body workout.

You can do this by performing flips, landing on your back and then landing on your feet, landing on your hands and pushing yourself back up, etc.

There are so many ways you can work out your whole body on the trampoline, the list is almost endless.

You can burn a lot of calories jumping rope as well.

According to AQFSports.com:

Rope skipping exercise can burn up to 15 to 20 calories every minute. You can easily burn 200 to 300 calories on an average by working out with your jump rope for 15 minutes only. So, if you want to know how long should I jump rope to lose weight, well then you have your answer.

Moreover, as compared to running, which is considered a great way to burn fats and shed a considerable amount of weight, rope skipping can help you burn 25% more calories per minute.

So you can burn quite a few calories jumping rope as well, as much as 25% more than running.

This probably depends on how fast you are jumping rope and if you are trying to do double jumps or anything fancy.

And jumping rope is a good option for exercise because you can do it in the warmth of your own home.

You won’t have to do it outside in the possible cold like you would running or jumping on a trampoline.

And jumping rope will give you a fuller body workout as well since you have to swing your arms to get the jump rope moving.

So for this category, I am going to make it a tie, since both have their advantages.

Advantage: Tie

Cost

There is going to be a big difference between the trampoline and jump rope when it comes to cost.

Trampolines can typically go from $100 for the mini trampolines and from $300 to up to $2,000 for the regular size trampolines.

It all depends on the size of trampoline you want to get and how much you feel like investing.

Trampolines can also last anywhere from 3 to 10 years, depending on how you treat them.

So if you purchase a $300 trampoline and have it for 10 years, that is a pretty good investment.

Jump ropes aren’t as much of an investment.

Jump ropes typically go for between $6 to $15, depending on the kind of jump rope you want to get.

The Amazon choice jump rope can be found here, for in between those two prices.

So you won’t have to invest much if you want the type of exercise that a jump rope will get you.

And because jump ropes are so cheap, they will win out in cost over the trampolines.

Advantage: Jump rope

Safety

The trampoline has some safety concerns.

First, by its very nature, the trampoline is off of the ground.

Depending on the type of trampoline you purchase, it could be inches or feet off of the ground.

This means that whoever is jumping on the trampoline is in danger of falling off and getting hurt.

In addition, there are spaces between the springs that someone could land in and end up getting their legs or ankles sprained or broken.

Of course, there are additional things that can be purchased, including a safety net and spring cover, that can make the trampoline safer.

But this doesn’t mean that people still cannot get hurt.

The jump rope, on the other hand, is one of the safest ways to exercise that you will find.

Yes, you might end up smacking yourself in the head with your jump rope a time or two, but other than that, there isn’t much danger to doing jump rope.

Advantage: Jump rope

Setup

The setup for the trampoline can take a little bit of time.

You have to start off by putting the base of the trampoline together.

This means connecting the different pieces of the base together and then using the nuts and bolts given to attach those pieces together.

Once the base is together, then you attach the legs by going through the same process.

And then you need to attach the trampoline mat.

This is going to be a harder job to do.

It may take one or two more people, or a day or two since it is so much work to do.

First, you’ll need a spring puller.

You can find one of those here.

Then, attach the first spring to the trampoline base.

After that, put it into a loop in the trampoline mat.

Continue around the whole trampoline placing a spring in the trampoline base and then into the mat.

Be very careful that you count correctly and don’t miss any loops while you are placing the springs.

If you do, you might have to pull out some springs and start over.

As you get further to the end of putting in the springs, it is going to be harder to do, hence the spring pull tool.

An hour or two, or a day or two later, you should be all done with the setup.

For the jump rope, all you have to do is take the jump rope out of the package and you should be all set.

Advantage: Jump rope

Maintenance

Jump ropes are low-maintenance items.

That means you have very little to do with the jump rope to keep it.

This doesn’t mean that you won’t have to replace it.

I’ve had a jump rope or two.

I’ve purchased ones that have weights in the jump rope handles.

It has also happened that I’ve dropped the handles and they broke.

So with jump ropes, while cheap, you might have to purchase them every once in a while if you do end up breaking them.

Trampolines take some maintenance as well.

First, you’ll want to walk around the trampoline at least once a month and check the nuts and bolts to make sure they are tight.

If they get too loose, then your trampoline might fall apart and break.

Second, you need to check the springs on a regular basis and replace any that are broken or rusted.

Otherwise, you won’t get enough bounce from your springs or they might end up flying off the trampoline and hurting someone.

If you treat your trampoline well, it should last at least 3 years with very little maintenance.

Advantage: Trampoline

Space

Jump rope obviously doesn’t take up very much space at all.

You could jump rope in the driveway, in an open room in your basement, or somewhere in your backyard.

The nicest part about it is when you are done, you are no longer taking up that space.

The jump rope doesn’t take up any room at all.

The trampoline, on the other hand, takes up quite a bit of space.

Depending on the size and kind you get will tell you how much space it needs.

For example, a 14-foot trampoline is 14 feet across, but you probably want at least a few feet of distance all around the trampoline.

Let’s say you do 5 feet of space all around the trampoline, which means you need 24 feet from one end to the other.

And that can be quite a bit of space, depending on the type of back or front yard you might have.

Advantage: Jump rope

Fun Factor

There are a lot of fun things you can do with a jump rope.

For example, you could count how many times you jump rope in a minute and then every day try to beat that record.

You could do the same with friends, where one person jumps the rope and then all of the friends try to beat that record.

You could also have fun with it by jumping rope while walking down the street.

Other fun games you could play with the jump rope include crossing the jump rope while you are jumping and seeing how many times you can do that before you mess up.

All of these things are fun to do with the jump rope and also help you to exercise.

The trampoline can be a lot of fun too.

At the most basic, the trampoline can be used to practice flips and other tricks (just be careful how many flips you do because too many in a row might mean you end up going off of the trampoline).

You can also have a lot of your friends join you in jumping on the trampoline.

There are other things you can purchase to include on your trampoline.

For example, you can purchase a basketball hoop you can put on the trampoline and shoot a basketball into it.

You could also purchase a ton of ball pit balls and throw them on the trampoline with the net up.

Then the trampoline becomes the ball pit.

You could also have a sleepover on the trampoline with your pillow and sleeping bag.

Really, the ideas are endless with the amount of fun you can have on the trampoline.

Compared to the jump rope, on the trampoline, there is so much more fun you can have.

Advantage: Trampoline

Summary

Trampolines and jump ropes are two great options for exercising.

And trampolines definitely have their upsides.

But if you have a choice between a trampoline and a jump rope, the jump rope is going to be better for you.
