How To Prepare Your Trampoline For Summer

Trampolines can be used year-round, but there is one season where trampolines are used the most.

That season is summer.

Summer is a popular time to use the trampoline because the temperature is nice outside, the amount of daylight you get is longer, and kids aren’t in school during the day.

So how do you prepare your trampoline for the summer? By checking the padding, checking the net, checking the mat, and checking the spring and spring holes.

Read on to find out some additional fun you can have during the summer on your trampoline.

Why prepare your trampoline for summer

If you’ve kept your trampoline up all year, before the summer begins is a perfect time to check your trampoline.

The winter is typically full of snow and the spring is full of rain.

These are all conditions that can sometimes take a toll on your trampoline.

And during the summer, your kids are going to spend more time on the trampoline.

So just before the summer is a good time to check your trampoline over so you can make any fixes before the use of the trampoline increases exponentially.

Check the padding

There are many areas of the trampoline that are there to keep people safe while jumping.

The padding is no exception.

According to InfinityTrampolines.com:

The trampoline pad is the section of the trampoline that sits over the frame and springs, protecting the jumper. Trampoline pads should be extra wide, so it covers the entire springs, preventing jumpers from getting caught in the trampoline springs. Trampoline pads should fit snugly against the frame, with a skirt hanging down. Quality trampoline pads should be closed cell polyethylene foam, which is waterproof. The top end of the trampoline pad should be encased all around by UV resistant, reinforced PVC as this improves the durability of the pad. 30mm of impact resistant foam offers excellent protection from the frame and springs. 20mm trampoline pads should be adequate for budget trampolines.

The trampoline pad is important because it 1) protects the jumper and 2) protects the springs and frame.

There are many ways that someone can get hurt on the trampoline pad if it is not in a place like it should be.

This includes landing on the springs, missing the trampoline mat, and having your leg go-between springs down to the ground, landing on the frame.

Having the pad in place means that you are not hurting the springs and frame and the springs and frame are staying intact.

So checking that the padding is in place is very important.

Make sure that the straps for the pads are tight so there will be little or no movement of the trampoline pad.

Also make sure there are no holes in the padding.

If, during a walkaround, you find there are holes in the trampoline pad, replace the padding as soon as possible.

You can do a search of Amazon to find your trampoline size.

If you purchased your trampoline from a retailer online, you can sometimes use their site to find replacement parts.

For example, if you bought your trampoline from Skywalker Trampolines, they have a part of their site where you can search for replacement parts by the type of trampoline that you purchased.

That search screen can be found here.

Once you have replaced the padding, the jumpers will be that much more safe.

Check the net

According to ProTrampolines.com:

The net encloses the trampoline and prevents users from falling off, which is the leading cause of injury when using a trampoline.

Parts of Trampoline – ProTrampolines

Trampoline nets are incredibly important because they protect someone from falling off of the trampoline onto the ground.

If someone is just doing regular jumping and falls off of the trampoline, it might not seem like they can get seriously hurt, but they can.

The average height someone can get on a trampoline is 16 feet into the air.

Now imagine that the trampoline is a good couple of feet off of the ground.

This means that a normal jumper is going almost 20 feet into the air.

If you fall off of the trampoline, you are falling almost 2 stories to the ground and that can be dangerous.

The net keeps people from falling off of the trampoline onto the ground, which also helps to keep people from getting injured.

So before summer begins, walk around the trampoline and check the safety net.

There are going to be two things to check for.

First, make sure there are no holes in the safety net.

Even the smallest hole someone can fall through if they fall at just the right angle.

They can also make the hole even bigger by just falling through it.

So if you find any holes in the net, you will want to replace it.

Second, the net is typically held up by poles.

Those poles keep the safety net in place, essentially making it a safety wall around the trampoline.

Check the poles to make sure they are sturdy and can hold up the safety net without a problem.

If you come across any safety net poles that are bent or look like they are about to bend, you may need to replace them right away.

Check the mat

The mat is one of the most important parts of the trampoline.

Without the mat, you wouldn’t be able to jump.

And just like the safety net, even the smallest hole in the trampoline mat can turn into a huge hole.

I’ve experienced at my house with my kids that a small hole in the trampoline mat soon turned into half of the trampoline mat being ripped.

They saw the hole in the mat as a challenge and wanted to make it bigger.

Pretty soon, the mat was no longer usable and we had to spend money to replace the mat.

So before the summer, walk around the trampoline mat and see if you can identify any holes.

If you see any small holes, you may be able to patch it.

Read one of our previous articles to find out how you can patch a trampoline mat hole.

If the hole is larger than a baseball, you won’t be able to patch it.

You’ll just need to replace it.

Check the springs and spring holes

Besides the mat, the springs are the next important part of the trampoline.

The spring are what builds up the kinetic energy that springs you into the air.

Because you’ve just passed through winter and spring, your springs may have suffered some water or other types of damage.

So just before summer would be a good time to check your springs.

The thing to look out for with the springs is first if they have any rust on them.

Rust would build up if the springs got moisture on them and then that moisture did not go away quickly enough.

If your springs are overcome with rust, they won’t be of any use to you.

Second, springs can wear out.

A spring will wear out eventually from the motion it goes through when someone is jumping.

A spring that is worn out will look much like a slinky that is worn out, the spring is longer than normal and doesn’t go back to its original shape.

So walk around the trampoline and see if you can find any springs that have rust on them or are worn out from too much use.

Then replace them.

Next, check the spring holes.

There are the holes on the outside of the trampoline mat.

The springs are typically put into a loop at the end of the trampoline mat.

Eventually these loops, or the part of the mat holding the loops, can wear out.

If the fabric holding the loops in place are worn out a little, you might be able to use a sewing machine to fix the trampoline mat.

If the fabric is worn out more than just a little bit, you will have to replace the hole in the trampoline mat.

Otherwise, if you don’t replace the trampoline mat, the springs could go flying off of the trampoline.

We have had this happen to us a few times unexpectedly because the trampoline could not take the weight we were putting on it.

Luckily the springs flew away from everyone on the trampoline, but if they have flown toward someone, that person could have been seriously injured.

Games to play on the trampoline

Crack the egg

One of our favorite games on the trampoline is called Crack the Egg.

You have one person on the trampoline sit down with their legs crossed.

Then they grab onto their ankles.

While they are grabbing onto their ankles, everyone else on the trampolines jumps up and down to make the person sitting let go of their ankles.

They should do this without touching the person sitting down.

The person sitting down can roll around on their back or any other way as long as they are still holding onto their ankles.

Once they have let go of their ankles, everyone determines who made the “egg” let go of their ankles, and then that person becomes the egg.

Monkey in the middle

Just like the regular game, but this one takes place on a trampoline.

One person starts in the middle of the trampoline while two people on opposite sides of the middle throw a ball at each other.

The “monkey” in the middle tries to catch the ball.

Once they catch the ball, the person who threw the ball that was caught becomes the new monkey.

Hot potato

Get some type of ball, whether a soccer ball, basketball, dodgeball, etc.

Put the ball in the middle of the trampoline.

Everyone bounces around the ball trying to get it to go into the air and touch someone.

Once it touches someone, that person is out of the game and they have to get off of the trampoline.

The game continues until there is only one person left.

Summary

Trampolines are fun year round, but especially during the summer.

Make sure to check your trampoline before the summary begins to ensure the trampoline is in the best condition it can be.

Then make sure to have fun with your family and friends.
